PREP SCHOOL THEATER TEACHER
Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School seeks a full-time Theater Teacher, with an emphasis in Scenic, Lighting, and/or Costume Design, to teach 9th Grade Theater and design-based elective courses.  This person will be responsible for designing and advising backstage students on two full-length productions, a dance concert, and a night of student directed theater, while helping develop our expansive performing arts offerings.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Teach sections of general theater (9th grade level) as well as a variety of elective courses focused in scenic, lighting, sound, costume, prop, and/or projection design, based on personal skill set and student interest.
  • Design two elements–scenery, costumes, or lighting–on a full-length play, full-length musical, and dance concert.
  • Advise 12th Grade students in producing a night of student-directed and designed theater.
  • Collaborate with our staff technical director to advise student backstage crews and stage management teams for all productions.
  • Lead technical rehearsals leading up to performances.
  • Provide meaningful, individualized feedback and support to students.
  • Work closely with colleagues, the department head, and prep school administration to support the academic, social, and emotional well being of all students.

Qualifications

  • BFA in theater design and production.
  • Significant experience designing theatrical productions at a professional or educational level.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, and a desire to work with a creative team of students, educators, and professional designers to put on theatrical productions.
  • Experience working with Adobe Create Suite and Vectorworks or AutoCAD software to produce process renderings and drafting packets.  
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive theater community.
  • Experience developing and leading experiential and process-based curriculum for students with a variety of interests and skill levels.
  • An intellectual curiosity, an aptitude for learning, and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Experience teaching at the high school level is preferred.
 

Work Hours

  • 7:45am-3:30pm Monday through Friday
  • Select after school rehearsals from 3:00pm-6:00pm 
  • Weekend and after school technical rehearsals leading to opening night
  • Weekly faculty and department meetings until 4:30pm
  • Start date: August 2024 
 

Compensation 

$71,000-$118,500; exceptional benefits, and a warm and supportive culture.
